Benefit:
Examines the meteorological conditions necessary for snow through craft play with a familiar winter icon.
Activity:
Each student will:
- Participate in class science lab, which examines the meteorological conditions necessary for snow (temperature, moisture, barometric pressure, etc.)
- Use Softtouch Multi-Purpose Scissors to cut out snowman shape and hat from cardboard paper plates.
- Glue cottonballs over entire body of snowman.
- Glue piece of black construction paper onto the cardboard hat. Cut base and sides of hat even with cardboard base with FISKARS® Student Scissors. Texturize the top of the hat with FISKARS® Paper Edgers Deckle LONG. Glue hat onto head of snowman.
- Use FISKARS® Paper Edgers Seagull to cutout a yellow hatband. Glue onto hat. Cut four, light-blue petals from paper with FISKARS® Student Scissors and glue onto corner of hatband. Glue red button in center of petal design.
- Use Softtouch Multi-Purpose Scissors to cut out two pink felt hearts and a triangle nose for snowman. Glue onto snowman's face.
- Use FISKARS® Student Scissors to cut a red-yarn smile for snowman. Glue onto face. Cut two black eyes from construction paper. Glue onto face. Mount wiggle eyes onto black paper eye bases.
- Use FISKARS® Student Scissors to cut a section of yellow wrapping paper ribbon for scarf. Glue around neck of snowman. Curl ends with scissors. Glue button onto center of scarf knot.
- Cut three quarter-sized pieces of light-blue construction paper. Glue onto snowman's body to represent buttons. Embellish each by gluing a button onto it.
Ideas:
Organize a class science lab, which examines the meteorological conditions necessary for snow (temperature, moisture, barometric pressure, etc.)
Allow students to design a Build a Snowman Contest. Encourage them to author design rules, entrance forms and prizes. Open contest to other classes or the whole school.
Research the tradition of snowman building. Invite class to write an autobiography of the first snowman: What did he say, feel, think, see, etc.
