Provides an understanding of how traditions evolve.
Develops an awareness of repetiton, space and shape.
Activity:
Each student will:
- Measure and lightly mark orange paper into eight 3" X 4 1/2" sections. This will serve as a guide for placement of black rectangles.
- Draw HALF of Jack -O' - Lantern on each black rectangle. Half of a stem, half of a nose, half of a mouth, one eye, etc.
- Cut Jack- O' - Lantern halves from black paper and glue to orange paper to create a WHOLE Jack - O' - Lantern. THERE ARE NO SCRAPS IN THIS PROJECT. The orange "background" is the negative space. The black shapes are the positive spaces.
- Begin by cutting one drawn pumpkin shape from rectangle. Immediately glue rectangle shape to orange paper. Cut and punch all features from Jack - O' - Lantern and set aside.
- Line up positive stem and bottom with negative stem and bottom & glue.
- Carefully position features and glue to orange paper.
Ideas:
Display on bulletin boards in quilt fashion.
Make individual jumbo positive negative Jack-O' - Lanterns as door covers.
