Benefit:
Build manual dexterity through braiding, cutting and gluing a holiday craft project.
Activity:
Each student will:
- (With teacher assistance as required) Use FISKARS® Circle Cutter to cut out three medium-sized white circles and three smaller pink circles from construction paper.
- Glue pink circle onto middle of white circles. Two circles will become mouse ears and the other will be made into a mouse face.
- Shade white portion of ears and face lightly with gray crayon.
- Glue two ears together. Glue face circle onto bottom of ears.
- Use black magic marker to draw face on mouse.
- Use FISKARS® Kids Scissors to cut holly leaves from green construction paper.
- Use FISKARS® 1/4 Circle Hand Punch to punch out red circle from construction paper for holly berries.
- Glue holly leaves and berries between mouse ears.
- Use FISKARS® Kids Scissors to cut two 18" strands of red, white, and green yarn. Knot yarn together. Section by color to braid necklace chain. Tie off end. Tape yarn chain to the back of mouse so that student can wear it as a holiday necklace.
Ideas:
Allow students to create biographies for their mice. Make adoption certificates complete with names, dates, and birth weights, etc. Invite students to pretend being parents to their mice. Discuss what makes a good parent.
Using this discussion as a springboard, write a class parenting book, "What Every Parent Needs to Know." Allow each student to write and illustrate a page of "advice."
Take class picture of students wearing their necklaces. Make book cover around class photo. Copy pages and bind books with braided cords. Give books as holiday gifts to parents.
