Pillows are a fun way to add or change up the personality in any room. You can always swap them out with store-bought options, but they're also really fun to make! Creating a pom pom decorative pillow is a simple, whimsical way to add a pop of color to any room. Follow the simple steps below to create this trendy accent today!

How To Sew A Pom-Pom Pillow

Step 1: Prepare to make the pom poms. First, after laying out your supplies needed for this project, make four pom poms for your decorative pillow. To keep your yarn that will shape the pom poms organized, use the Fiskars Detail Knife to trim a piece of cardboard to 3" wide. Then cut a groove through the center of the cardboard, measuring 1" x 3".

Step 2: Assemble the pom poms. Cut a length of yarn and position it over the center of the groove. Hold this section of yarn in place as you wrap additional yarn around the cardboard. When you've reached your desired pom pom thickness, tie the yarn at the center tightly with the length you placed in the bottom of the groove in the beginning.

Step 3: Finish the pom poms. Use the Fiskars Fashion Scissors to cut the two outside edges of the wrapped yarn. Remove the pom pom from the cardboard and fluff and trim into a tidy sphere. Do not trim the two long lengths of yarn at the bottom of the pom pom. Create three more pom poms in the same way.

Step 4: Cut the fabric for the cushion. Now that your pom poms are created, you can focus on sewing the cushion for the pillow. Use the Fiskars Classic Stick Fashion Rotary Cutter (60 mm) to cut three pieces of fabric to the following dimensions:

  • 1 piece measuring 22" x 22" (for the cushion front)
  • 1 piece measuring22" x 11"(for the cushion back)
  • 1 piece measuring22" x 17"(for the cushion back)

Step 5: Hem the cushion back pieces. We'll be leaving a hole in the back of the cushion cover where you can insert the pillow once the cover has been constructed. Turn over one 22" edge of both cushion back pieces by 1/4" to the wrong side. Turn again by 1/4" to the wrong side to hide the cut edge, and sew in place to create neatly seamed edges.

Step 6: Pin the cushion pieces. Place the cushion front fabric piece on your work surface with the right side of the fabric facing you. Then, place the smaller back fabric piece on top with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. The hemmed edge should be in the center and the raw edges of the fabric pieces should be aligned. Now, place the larger back fabric piece on top of the front fabric piece, covering the hemmed edge of the first back fabric piece. Place pins around the perimeter of the cushion except at the corners.

Step 7: Pin the pom poms to the cushion. Take your first pom pom and tuck it inside the cushion, leaving the long ends of yarn hanging out from the corner. Pin in place. Repeat for all four corners of the cushion.

Step 8: Sew the cushion. Sew around the perimeter of the cushion and use backwards and forwards stitches in the corners, as well as at the hemmed seams for reinforcement. Trim the yarn and clip the corners of the sewn cushion once sewing is complete.
