Backyard Oasis: Planting and Dividing

by Chris Lambton

When creating your backyard oasis, you may want to add new varieties of plants to your backyard, but don't forget about the plants you have already. Dividing perennials is not only beneficial for the plant but can also supplement your planting plan.

1. The first step is to determine which plants are ready to be divided. When perennials grow for a few seasons you will notice that their clump has gotten 2-3 times larger. These plants are perfect for division. If they are not divided, it can be detrimental to the health of the plant as it may begin dying out in the middle leaving a bare spot.Once you have chosen a plant to divide, it is time to dig out the root ball. I like to use Fiskars long-handled steel digging shovel, which is ideal for digging in tough soil. The long handle also eliminates sore knees and back pain from bending.

2. Once you have dug out the root ball, shake off excess dirt so you can see where to split the plant. The Billhook is perfect for this job. It has both a 6" hooked blade and a serrated edge for cutting. Depending on the size of the perennial, either side can do the job. For smaller perennials, like lilies, the 6" hooked blade will slice through easily. For larger jobs, like ornamental grasses, the serrated side will help you get through the thicker roots. Whatever side you choose will provide a contoured SoftGrip handle that is sculpted to fit your hand. This will prevent the billhook from slipping during use. Its one-handed feature will allow you to keep the other hand free, making the splitting process easier.

3. Now that you have turned one plant into two, it is time to get them in the ground. The Fiskars long-handled shovel is great for digging new planting holes. It has an extra large foot platform that will provide maximum force when driving the sharpened blade into the soil.

4. Fill in your oasis with new plant varieties to add some color and dimension. If you are going to purchase additional plants for your oasis, you can split those roots as well to double what you have.

5. It's time to rake up all the debris and put down a layer of mulch to make sure that weeds don't pop up and to give the area a finished look. A steel fork is ideal for moving large piles of mulch.

6. Spread and level your mulch with the aluminum garden rake for a finished look.

7. Finish off by giving your newly planted oasis a good soak.

You have now turned one plant into two expanding your landscape and keeping your plants healthy. Repeat this process every year to create a beautiful, lush yard full of plants.
