The milk carton’s new clothes

With a little help from scissors and imagination, a milk carton or another package transforms into a colourful flower pot, pen stand or container for sweets, art supplies or other bits and bobs. Many packages have the useful feature of being waterproof, and their material makes them firm and steady.

Material

  • Milk carton or other package
  • Scissors
  • Colourful sheets of paper
  • Glue

Fold a sheet of paper around the carton to get a pattern for the carton’s new jacket. Cut the sheet of paper to fit around the carton and leave a little extra in one end where the glue can be applied. Many milk cartons are conveniently A4 sized. Draw the outline of the upper edge on the sheet and cut off the extra material.

Compose and cut shapes to decorate the sides. If you want to be as fast as possible, cut the same shapes in one go. Arrange and glue the shapes onto the sides.

Glue the edges and the bottom of the new jacket so that it forms a box. Put the milk carton or other package back inside it. This way your new container will be firm, even waterproof.

With this fabulous new jacket, the container can now be used as a flower vase, for growing Easter grass, or for storing small items.
