How to make a festive evergreen Christmas wreath

The traditional Christmas wreath is a naturally festive decoration for your front door or mantelpiece. It also makes for a great gift during the holiday season. Remember to bring your pruners with you when heading out to collect the materials.

Remember to bring your pruners with you when heading out to collect the materials. It’s much better for the plant to have its branches cut than for them to be torn apart by hand. Sharp pruners will make a nice and even cut.

Use whichever evergreens you happen to have available. White cedar, pine, juniper, fir, yew and boxwood are all great alternatives. Especially boxwood, white cedar and yew don’t mind being cut and will quickly grow new branches. You can either use a readymade straw base or make one yourself, for example using willow branches.

If you make your own base, start by forming a loop from a straight and long willow branch. Wrap a few more branches around the loop to make it sturdy and thick.

Cut the evergreens into small pieces and apply them to the base in small bundles. Wrap the first bundle tightly to the base with a florist’s wire. Wrap the wire two or three times around the stems. Add another bundle and wrap it tightly. Continue adding the bundles tightly next to each other until the wreath base is completely covered. Tie off the wire and embellish your wreath with ribbons and other things you can think of. For a natural look, you can use a sackcloth ribbon.

Make it as minimalistic or richly decorated as you want. Now it’s ready to be displayed – for example on your front door for a welcoming holiday look.
