Step 1

Create a pattern.

To create the base of your bag:

• Draw a rectangle 7” x 11”
• At the bottom corners of the rectangle, draw a square 1.5” x 1.5”
• Cut out rectangle then cut out each square from your rectangle.

To create the strap of your bag:

• Cut out a long rectangle 3.25” x 12.5”

Step 3

Draw a quilting pattern.

• Using your fabric marking tool, create a mark at the center of your bag. From that center mark create a mark on both sides at every 1.25”
• Create marks down the side edge of the bag at 1.25”
• Draw lines across the bag to create what will look like a checkerboard.

Step 4

Sew the quilting pattern.

Place the quilting batting on the backside of your main fabrics and sew across the lines you drew.

Step 5

Iron quilted bag.

Take quilted bag to your ironing board and iron across surface of fabric to remove markings.

Step 6

Pin sides and bottom.

With right sides of your quilted fabric facing each other, pin the sides and bottom. Sew at ½” seam allowance.

Step 7

Stitch bottom and side seam.

At bottom corners, match bottom and side seam, stitch in place at ½” seam allowance.

Step 8

Repeat Step 7 with the lining fabric.

Repeat previous step with lining fabric leaving a 4” opening at the bottom seam.

Step 9

Determine magnetic closure placement.

Mark the placement of your magnetic closure. It should be placed 2” from the top center. Iron a small square of medium weight interfacing.

Step 10

Sew closure to lining.

Add the closure to both sides of your lining. Set aside.

Step 11

Sew strap casing.

Grab your strap fabric. Fold in half. Press. Fold in ¼” of fabric on both sides. Press. Take to sewing machine and sew in place. Sew as close to edge as possible.

Step 12

Feed strap webbing into casing.

Cut webbing strap to 14” in length. Add safety pin to one end and pull it through the strap casing you previously created. Bunch up fabric as go. Pay attention to the end of your strap. Do not lose it inside the casing. Once the webbing meets the end of casing, sew in place on both ends.

Step 13

Sew bunched strap to quilted bag.

Sew ends of strap to top center side seam of quilted bag.

Step 14

Create small loops for accent pieces.

Create a smaller loop similar to the strap. Sew loop on top of strap.

Step 15

Sew lining to quilted bag.

With the right sides of your fabrics facing, place the quilted bag inside of your lining. Using fabric clips, hold top edge in place. Sew entire top edge at ½” seam allowance.

Step 16

Turn bag inside out.

Turn bag right side out by pulling quilted bag through bottom lining opening. Be careful not to rip any seams.

Step 17

Sew remaining edge.

Take your lining and stitch opening closed.
Top stitch around top edge of your bag at 1/8” seam allowance.

Step 18

Accessorize!

Add accessories. Add metal letters to front of bag. Don’t forget to add metal chain to the small loops of your bag.
