Kid's Holiday Ornaments

by Lia Griffith

There are tons of great kids crafts for the holidays, but one of the most classic projects for the season is DIY ornaments. Here is a simple template and tutorial for making a festive, 20-sided ornament with fun colors and patterns.

Kid's Holiday Ornaments

1. Start this project by downloading the holiday ornament PDFs provided above and printing onto white cardstock.

2. Cut apart the rows of the printed design using Blunt-tip Kids Scissors (5"), so the circles will be easier to reach with a punch.

3. Use circle or scalloped circle punches to trim the designs in the PDF to size (2" circles). Punch additional circles from coordinating cardstock. You'll need 20 circles to complete each ornament. The top layer of the ball includes five 2-inch circles, the middle layer is made up of ten 2-inch circles, and the bottom layer matches the top layer with five 2-inch circles.

4. When you have all of the 2-inch circles punched out, use the triangle template included in the downloadable PDF to fold the edges of the circles. Place the triangle piece in the center of the circle, then fold the visible edges upward.

5. Use hot glue to attach the folded edges of the circles to each other, eventually forming a ball. Start at the bottom and work you way to the top.Hot glue is a good adhesive choice because it dries quickly and bonds securely, but an adult will need to help with this step. If kids want to work more independently on this project, you can try using another adhesive that bonds quickly, like permanent double-sided tape.

6. Before gluing the top layer of the ornament, punch a small hole toward the top of two of the circles with a 1/8" Circle Hand Punch and place a piece of string or twine through the holes to make a hanger. Determine how long or short you want the ornament to hang and cut the twine or string with scissors accordingly.

7. Finish gluing the top layer and tie the string together at the ends so the ornament can be hung for display.
