NYE Party Ideas: Holographic Garland

by Paper & Stitch

With New Year's Eve right around the corner, why not try your hand at homemade décor? Holographic material is a trend that is everywhere this year, so add some shimmer and sparkle to your new year by creating this simple garland. As you can imagine, having the right tools makes this project easy and much faster to make. The Fiskars® Thick Materials Punches are great for cutting thick papers and specialty items such as aluminum cans, cardboard, balsa wood, milk jugs, and foam.

NYE Party Ideas: Holographic Garland

1. Begin by punching out the circles and stars from holographic paper using various sizes of Fiskars® Thick Materials Punches. This punch allows you to cut through multiple sheets at a time.

2. After several shapes have been punched out, cut a long piece of string to use as the garland. Then, place a small bead of hot glue in the center of the back of a star or circle, and press the string onto the glue before adding the same shape on top to create a sandwich.

3. Repeat this process to create the entire garland.

4. Create a fuller look by making multiple garland strands using the steps above and string them together. This will be especially helpful if you decide to use them as a photo booth backdrop. The project featured has six garland strands.

If you are looking to add more dimension to the garland, cut 1/2 inch strips out of holographic paper with the Amplify Mixed Media Shears, which are great for clean cuts on thick materials. Follow the same process as outlined above, however, use the strips of holographic paper rather than the punched shapes.

To use the garland as a photo booth backdrop, take a sheet of colorful paper and adhere to a large space on the wall. Once the paper is secure on the wall, hang the garlands, and the photo booth is ready to go.
